| The Vishwanath Temple (Benares) It is also called Golden Temple. This temple is the most sacred in Varanasi and it is in honor of Vishveswara, master of the universe. The temple was built in 1776 and its towers are gilded with more than 800 kilos of gold. |

| Fort Maidan and Fort William (Calcutta) In 1756 the British wanted to build a new fort in Calcutta to replace the one they already had, Fort William. The fort was not completed until 1781 and had at that point cost two million £. At the same time a large area of jungle was cleared so that the canons could be shot from the fort. The canons has of yet never been fired. The fort is still in use, but it is possible to get inside and have a look around. |

| The City of Chandigarh (Chandigarh) Chandigarh is in Haryana. The European architect Le Corbusier built the whole city, and it is a very special city compared to other cities in India. The city is very functionally built; there are many open spaces and green parks. It is clean; there are not any beggars on the streets or cows roaming around in the city, which is normal in India. The Indians are very proud of Chandigarh that is not like any other city in the country. |

| Fort St George (Chennai (Madras)) The fort was built around 1653 by the British East Indian Regiment. Since then the fort has been altered a great deal, but the 46-meter high flagpole is still standing in front of the entrance. The pole is an old mast from a ship that sank off the coast in the 1700's. Inside the fort you will find a museum that exhibits objects from both the British and the French. |

| Jama Masjid Mosque (Delhi) This large mosque is India's largest, but also the last of the impressive pieces of architecture done by Shan Jahan. The mosque was built between 1644 and 1658; it has three entrances and four towers. It is made out of red sandstone and white marble. |

| Red Fort (Delhi) This fort is built on red sandstone and its walls go on for more than two kilometers and are up to 33 meters tall. Shan Jahan built the fort between 1638 and 1648. The fort has some impressive architecture and when you enter the fort's gardens and pavilions you are light years away from the noise and bustle on the other side of the walls. |
