Agra

Agra Fort

Agra Fort is built with red sandstone and is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River. The fort's walls are over 20 meters high and inside the fort itself there are a lot of smaller buildings that actually create a little town. You can have loads of exciting experience in the fort and it can come in handy to have a guide who can show you around.

Akbars Mausoleum

Akbar's (one of India's greatest emperors) Mausoleum can be found in the middle of a peaceful garden about four kilometers from Agra. The tombstones are made out of sandstone and marble. This place is particularly intriguing if you are interested in the architecture from that time period that culminated with the magnificent Taj Mahal.

Taj Mahal

Most people all around the world know the Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal is without a doubt one of the world's most spectacular buildings, and it is famous for its architectural grandness and aesthetic beauty. The Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in memory of his second wife Mumtaz Mahal who died while giving birth in 1631. The construction of the building was started the same year and was completed in 1653. You must visit the Taj Mahal while you are in India.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Mount Harriet

Mount Harriet is North of Port Blair. There is a natural oath up to the top of the mountain and it is an exceptional trip if you like nature walks. From the top of the mountain you can overlook the whole area including Madhuban, where they often train elephants.

The City of Port Blair

Port Blair is the largest city on the islands and is situated in southern Andaman. The city is cozy and has a charming atmosphere. A couple of the city's main attractions are among others: the city's aquarium that has over 350 different species of fish; and the museum of anthropology, where you can find tools and clothing from the islands original population. All in all a good place if you are interested in the history of the islands.

Ghats (crematories)

One of the main attractions in Varanasi is the long row of Ghats that are along the western banks of the Ganges. Most of them are used to bath from, but some of them are used for cremating. The locals usually do not mind if you would like to witness a cremation, but they do not appreciate photographing of the ceremony.

The River Ganges

The River Ganges is one of the most popular destinations for travelers in the area. A trip on the river at dawn creates a very special light that draws a fantastic landscape. There are tour boats that will take you down the river, or you can rent a personal guide with a boat.

The Vishwanath Temple

It is also called Golden Temple. This temple is the most sacred in Varanasi and it is in honor of Vishveswara, master of the universe. The temple was built in 1776 and its towers are gilded with more than 800 kilos of gold.

Chandigarh

The City of Chandigarh

Chandigarh is in Haryana. The European architect Le Corbusier built the whole city, and it is a very special city compared to other cities in India. The city is very functionally built; there are many open spaces and green parks. It is clean; there are not any beggars on the streets or cows roaming around in the city, which is normal in India. The Indians are very proud of Chandigarh that is not like any other city in the country.

Chennai (Madras)

Fort St George

The fort was built around 1653 by the British East Indian Regiment. Since then the fort has been altered a great deal, but the 46-meter high flagpole is still standing in front of the entrance. The pole is an old mast from a ship that sank off the coast in the 1700's. Inside the fort you will find a museum that exhibits objects from both the British and the French.

The Government Museum

The museum is in buildings that once belonged to a high-ranking British Government Officer. The museum's main building contains an excellent archeological section where all the large time periods in the country are represented. The Bronze Gallery in the museum has an impressive collection of bronze art from ancient time.

Delhi

Jama Masjid Mosque

This large mosque is India's largest, but also the last of the impressive pieces of architecture done by Shan Jahan. The mosque was built between 1644 and 1658; it has three entrances and four towers. It is made out of red sandstone and white marble.

Red Fort

This fort is built on red sandstone and its walls go on for more than two kilometers and are up to 33 meters tall. Shan Jahan built the fort between 1638 and 1648. The fort has some impressive architecture and when you enter the fort's gardens and pavilions you are light years away from the noise and bustle on the other side of the walls.

The National Museum

The National Museum has an impressive collection of bronze; terracotta- and wood sculptures that date all the way back to the second and third century before Christ. There are guided tours of the museum that can offer you an interesting insight into much of the country's history.

Goa

Goas Beaches

The beaches on Goa are some of the best in the country. White beaches, azure-blue swimming water, swaying palm trees, and lots of sun are characteristic for Goa. It is an excellent place if you just want to relax and enjoy life.

Panajiss Church

The main church in Panajis is in the square in the middle of the city. Panajis is one of the places that a lot of the Portuguese came to, and the first thing they did upon their arrival was go into the church and give thanks for a safe journey. The church is incredibly beautiful and services are held there three times a day in English, Konkani, and Portuguese.

The Goa State Museum

The museum is in the city of Panaji in the northern part of Goa. The museum was first opened in 1996 and is a modern and well-organized museum. The exhibitions consist of Christian art, Hindu sculptures, and paintings from all over India. The museum is still under development and there will be more exciting exhibitions in the future.

Gujarat

The City of Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is a large industrial city in Gujarat. The city is one of the best places to go if you are interested in Hindu and Islamic architecture. The city has many interesting mosques and temples that are worth studying. Moreover the city has one of the world's nicest and most impressive textile museums that exhibit everything from old to new. The museum also has several old looms in exhibition.

The Shatrunjaya Temples

Shatrunjaya is an entire complex in the mountaintops. The place contains 863 temples and is one of the most sacred places for the Jain people. The temples were built in honor of the populations Gods and it was done over a period of 900 years. The temples vary in size and are an impressive sight.

The Village of Mandvi

Mandvi is a small village southwest of Bhuj. The city has a long history in shipbuilding and fishing. Today the village is mostly known for its exquisite white beaches and azure-blue sea. It is a great place to relax and enjoy life.

Indian Museum

The Indian Museum was established in 1878 and it is India's largest and best museum. The exhibitions at the museum are split up into six different categories; archeology, art, anthropology, geology, zoology, and industry. Because they are so well arranged the exhibitions are easier to see, and you can gather loads of knowledge about the country's history during a trip through the museum.

Kanha National Park

This park is one of India's largest national parks. The landscape is made up of forests and grassy plains that are only interrupted by streams and rivers. In the park you can ride elephants, and see other fascinating wild animals such as leopards, sambhar deer, and tigers. The best time to see the wild animals is during the warm months of March and April, the animals come out to drink at the watering holes because of the heat, and this makes them easier to spot.

Kaziranhga National Park

Kaziranhga National Park was turned into a reserve in 1908 and a national park in 1074. The area covers some impressive nature including thick rain forest, roaring rivers, and large grass areas with plenty of elephants. In the park you can also find tigers, cobras, leopards, fallow deer and various birds.

Mysore

Mysore is a charming and calm city that is popular among travelers. It has a reasonable size, a good climate, and is a good place to relax. The city is especially known for its silk. The down town area of the city is The Devaraja, which is a fruit and vegetable market. The market has a reputation for being one of the most colorful in all of India.

The Ellora Temple Caves

The Ellora Temple Caves consist of 34 caves that are carved into a giant rock. The caves were made between the years 200 and 1000 and are rich with sculptures and architectural treasures. The caves represent three different belief systems those being Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

The Khajuraho Temples

The Khajuraho Temples are one of India's most visited attractions. Chandela's king between 950 and 1050 built the temples. Originally the area consisted of 85 temples, but today only about 20 temples remain. The temples were unknown for centuries until they were discovered in 1838 by a British captain. In the temples you can see a number of drawings that have been carved into the walls.

The City of Srinagar

The City of Srinagar is situated near Dal Lake and the beautiful Jhelum River. The city and the area are extremely enchanting; the city with its seven bridges and the area for its labyrinth of small streams and rivers.

The Kashmir Valley

This is a valley area that winds along with the Jhelum River. A picturesque scenery is what you will find in the valley; green fertile areas with an endless amount of small waterholes and lakes all around. Many travel to this area because of the cool altitudes that are more comfortable than the extreme heat in the lowlands.

Kerala

The City of Kovalam

Kovalam is primarily known for having exquisite beaches with perfect water for swimming. The city gets a lot of travelers, who mostly come to relax for a couple of weeks on the beautiful beaches. The city is cozy and charming and most certainly worth a visit if you could use a few days of relaxation.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary Nature Reserve

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular places for the many travelers who decide to say good-bye to India's masses and step into this fascinating world of animals. In the park you are able to go for walks, go on jungle hikes, or guided tours to see some of the wild animals that among others include buffalo, antelopes, and monkeys.

The Village of Alleppey (Alappuzha)

Alleppey is a little cozy market village that is built over canals and surrounded by coconut trees. The largest attraction in Alleppey is the backwater cruises. Kohima

The City of Kohima

Kohima is the largest city in Nagaland. Koshima is where the Japanese first arrived in 1944. The city still ahs a well-kept war cemetery from that period. Furthermore you will find the State Museum in Koshima, and it has a fantastic collection of statues and artifacts from the ancient Naga tribes.

Kolkata (Calcutta)

Fort Maidan and Fort William

In 1756 the British wanted to build a new fort in Calcutta to replace the one they already had, Fort William. The fort was not completed until 1781 and had at that point cost two million £. At the same time a large area of jungle was cleared so that the canons could be shot from the fort. The canons has of yet never been fired. The fort is still in use, but it is possible to get inside and have a look around.

The Kali Temple

Kali Temple was built in 1809 on top of an even older temple. This place is very popular with pilgrims, who come in large numbers to the temple. Inside the museum you will find portraits, statues, and busts of most of the important people from British India. The museum is interesting and tells about a good portion of India's history.

Mumbai (Bombay)

Crawford Market

Crawford Market is also called Mahatma Phule Market and is a colorful market that is rights before the city's central bazaars. The market place is vibrant and chaotic, and is an experience in itself. You can primarily buy fruit and vegetables at the market.

Elephanta Island (Elephanta)

If you would like to get away from the big city of Mumbai's noise and pollution, then it is a good idea to go to Elephanta Island. There are no elephants there, but in stead a number of impressive Hindu cave temples.

The Prince of Wales Museum

The museum is from 1923 and is in an impressive building. The museum exhibits among other things sculptures from Elephanta Island, Gujarat and Karnataka, miniature paintings, porcelain, and weapons. The exhibitions give you a good impression of the area's history.

Victoria Gardens

Victoria Gardens is a wonderful place to go for a walk and relax. The gardens offer beautiful flowers and plants as well as several large sculptures - among others a gigantic stone elephant that comes from Elephanta Island.

Punjab & Haryana

The City of Amritsar

Amritsar is in Punjab and was founded by Ram Das, who was the Sikh's fourth guru. The city is the center for the Sikh religion, and it is also here that you will find the Sikh's golden temples. In Amritsar you will also find Jallianwala Bagh that is a park that functions as a burial ground for 2000 Indians that were killed by the British in 1919, during a massacre that you can see in the movie "Ghandi".

The Golden Temples

The golden temples are the most sacred places in the whole Sikh religion. The temples are an extremely beautiful and peaceful place, especially in the morning when there are not that many people. The golden temples are definitely worth a visit and there are English guides there to show you around. Before you enter the temple you have to remove your shoes and cover your head.

Rajahstan

Jaipur

Jaipur is known as the pink city because of its pink houses. The inhabitants consider pink to be a color that is associated with kindness. It is said that the houses were colored pink when the British Prince Alfred visited the city in 1853. Today over 1.500.000 million live in the city, but its inhabitants have maintained the city's easy-going atmosphere and friendliness. The city has an infinite number of impressive architectural buildings and is surrounded by beautiful nature and hilled landscape.

Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is a desert village and it is also known as the Golden City because of the honey colored glow that rests on the city when the suns last rays hit it. The city built almost like a fort, and it is an extremely fantastic experience.

The Pushkar Region

Pushkar is primarily known for Lake Pushkar and for the annual camel races in October. Many temples and ghats surround the Lake and it is a sacred place to many Hindu. The city is the center for many pilgrims and you will see many Hindu who come to the city to bath in the lake. The camel races are definitely an attraction in Pushkar. Tourists and moviemakers flock to the city to see this show, and it definitely is not boring.

Udaipur

Udaipur is said to be the most romantic city in the romantic state of Rajasthan. It is built around the beautiful lake Pichola. The city is a wonderful mixture of whitewashed houses, squares with marble, temples, and fantastic gardens on the banks of the lake. The water supply possibilities the lake creates make the city a noticeable oasis in an otherwise dry area.

Tamil Nadu

The Brihadishwara Temple

The Brihadishwara Temple was built by Raja Raja in 1010 and is the prize jewel of the Chola's temple architecture. The monument is truly amazing and an impressive work of construction. The wonderful architectural and aesthetic structure has to be visited if you are going to this area.

The City of Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari is the end of the India; it is here that the Bengali Gulf meets the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. The city is of great religious significance for the Hindu. This place is dedicated to the Goddess Devi Kanya and pilgrims flock to the city to visit the temple or to bath in the holy water.

The City of Mamallapuram

Mamallapuram is famous for its coastal temple. The city is ancient and was actually at its best from the 5th century to the 8th century. At that time several temples were built as well as several stone carvings. These monuments are still standing as ruins and are truly amazing to explore.
