Attractions from Malawi

Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi National Park

Close to Monkey Bay lays this national park that gives shelter to a population of freshwater fish, of which there are so many that the amount surpasses those of both Europe and North America put together. Larger animals can also be found in the water so hippopotami and crocodiles fight with the many fish over space, while on land you can see zebras, leopards, and a number of different kinds of monkeys. It is possible to spend the night in the area.

Lilongwe

Nature Sanctuary Reserve

Between the two cities lays a nature reserve that inhabits a good deal of wild life. There is also a tourist agency that can give you a lot of information about the wild life and nature in Malawi. There are ample opportunities for walks along the laid-out paths.

The market

The wonderful market in Old Town is full of life. You can buy anything at the market, but even if you do not intend to do any shopping it is worth a visit just to walk around and take in the atmosphere.

Malawi

Kasunga National Park

As one of the largest national parks in Malawi it covers an area of over 2000 kilometres and is home to lions, zebras, elephants, and leopards. When you have had enough safaris you can see the breath-taking cave paintings that can also be found in the area.

Lengwe National Park

This national park is not far from Malawi's second largest city Blantyre, here antelopes, leopards, lions, buffaloes, and monkeys live together in perfect harmony. There is a lodge in the park, but it is not possible to buy something to eat there, so unless you intend to shoot your own dinner it would be wise to bring provisions.

Mount Mulanje

Mount Mulanje is very interesting for rock climbing and hiking enthusiasts. Its heaven bound paths that guide you to a view that overlooks vertiginous descents bathed in mist make all of the journeys hardships worth their while. You can spend the night in cabins on the mountain's sides. The over 3000 meter high mountain is placed in a meadow of great scenic beauty where rivers filled with salmon run through cedar forests.

The Islands of Chizimulu and Likoma

These palm filled islands are situated far from the rush and bustle of daily life. The beaches are well equipped for relaxation, and the ocean hides exotic fish that can be discovered with a snorkel and goggles if there is not any room in the sun. On Likoma there is a large Anglican cathedral that the Christian population of the country built to scare off evil spirits.

The Zomba tableland

Until 1975 Zomba was the capitol of Malawi so the city has both a parliament building and a presidential palace. You can also visit the city's exciting market place and botanical garden. In the region are also Mandala Falls and rivers and mountains, of which especially Queen's View has a spectacular viewing spot.

Nkhata Bay

The city of Nkhata Bay

One of Lake Malawi's most beautiful cities is Nkhata Bay. Tourists flock to this little spot to see the fantastic beaches, go diving in the lake and do some bird watching in the nearby Kalwe Forest.
