If you are planning on a city break, Vienna has enough to keep you busy for days, for several holidays, in fact.
Whether you choose to go to Vienna on a city break or on a longer holiday, you can always find your cheap flight tickets to Vienna on Travelmarket.
To get you started, we give you ten absolute Vienna classics, the ten best sights in Vienna:
Schönbrunn Palace: (see image) the former emperor’s summerresidence, not least the residence of the popular Empress Sisi. Visit the impressive baroque complex and see the Palm House, the Gloriette, the Zoological Garden and all the other things Schönbrunn has to offer. You can easily spend a full day at Schönbrunn.
Hofburg, the imperial palace: For more than 700 years, until 1918, the Austrian Empire was ruled from Hofburg. The building of the palace was commenced upon in the 13th century and increased in size as the power of the Habsburg family grew. Today, Hofburg houses the offices of Austria’s president.
The Stephan’s Cathedral: Austria’s most spectacular gothic building. The church contains many works of art, some of which can only be seen on guided tours. Walk up the 343 steps and enjoy a breathtaking view of Vienna.
Prater Riesenrad, the large ferriswheel, has become a landmark of Vienna. One round in the almost 70 m high ferriswheel takes about 20 minutes and gives you a wonderful view of Vienna and the Vienna Woods.
The Ring: In 1857, Viennas old bastions and city walls were torn down to make space for a splendid boulevard around the old city centre. Go for a walk around the Viennas inner city and get a great view of all the fantastic buildings from the Habsburg dynasty.
Belvedere was built as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. This jewel among baroque buildings consists of two parts: Upper Belvedere and Lower Belvedere. In Upper Belvedere you find the biggest collection of the artist Gustav Klimt’s works of art. In Lower Belvedere is the home of Prince Eugene and in the stables you will find a collection of Medieval art.
The Spanish Riding School derives its name from its Spanish Lippizan horses. See the impressive gala shows, the Lippizan Ballet, or attend the morning practice in the beautiful baroque buildings of Hofsburg, the Imperial Palace.
Vienna Opera House, the State Opera of Austria, one of the premier opera addresses in the world with an impressive repertoire and density of performances. The guided tours gives you a good insight into the daily work at the Opera House.
The Anker Clock: This curious watch forms a bridge between the two houses of the Anker insurance company. In the course of the day, 12 historical figures pass the bridge, one for each hour. Every day at noon, all 12 figures pass the bridge, each accompanied by music from their own historical period.
And remember that you haven’t really been to Vienna before you have enjoyed a cup of well-made coffee with a slice of “torte" in one of Vienna’s many famous cafés.
Enjoy your holiday!
