Funding for improved links to Manchester Airport
01-01-2009
Passengers on flights to and from Manchester will soon benefit from improved road and rail links to the city’s airport thanks to a wide-ranging funding package.
Transport secretary Geoff Hoon has revealed that £165 million will be invested into improving road links to the North West airport, which is currently classed as the UK's fourth largest aviation hub with 21 million people using it each year.
The new funds will go towards building new sections of road between the A555 and the M56 Manchester Airport Spur. New road sections will also be created as part of the South East Manchester Relief Road scheme.
Geoff Hoon says that the investment reflects the Government’s commitment to supporting economic growth in the UK.
Manchester International Airport is of crucial economic importance and key to the future prosperity of the North of England, explained Mr Hoon.
He went on to say the proposed links will help airport employees, passengers travelling to the airport from south-east Manchester and from further afield, other long-distance traffic on the M60 and M56 and the wider local community.
The £165 million package will also unblock a scheme that has languished on engineering drawing boards for far too long, and he hoped that it will galvanise regional and local partners into considering how the scheme can go ahead.
