Since the southern parts of Ecuador has not followed the same pattern of development as the rest of the country, the standard for hotels is considerably lower here than in the rest of the country. This does not necessarily mean that you cannot find a good hotel here, only that you might have to work harder to find it. In general accommodation is cheaper in the south. Local transport

Top

Taxi

Taxis work well in the cities. Some smaller places may only have one taxi in the village. Then you will have to wait until it becomes available.

Other transport

Taking the bus is usually preferred as the best way to get around in the region. However, somewhere the roads are in a miserable condition, and the busses must drag themselves along. Delays are not seen as a great problem.

Many tourists have not yet visited the region. You must be prepared to meet more scepticism than in the rest of the country. If you walk gingerly you will receive a hearty welcome.
