The shadow of the waves
Late night last night watching a movie, woke up about 10 and headed onto the beach for a little swim. water is not that good so did not stay in for long.
looked for a place to do some yoga, couple of doors down along the beack to the left of TinTin there is a half built/broken building facing the sea. The waves lap at the steps, the lowest one is under water moss covered and a little slippery. the base which is the same structure and level as other buildings (anout a meter off the sand) is of concrete and rocks. the side wall has a vertical crack and has come away slightly, there are no front or back walls. I do some yoga but not too happy as the concrete floor has some sand which is uncomfortable, I head back to TinTIn to get the broom and clear the floor. On the corner of the TinTin lawn (to the front left of our room)there is a large tree with a small patch of grass which I try to clear of pebbles by hand. One guy is sweeping with a stiff broom and helps out. I yoga for a while, some salutes to the sun nice and slowly, then a set of Tibettan. I feel quite relaxed now so sit by the edge of the platform and watch the waves for couple of hours. It is really nice to be able to do this. Succession of waves wash ashore, all different. Sometimes it looks as if one wave stands still as the previous wave washes back under it going back into the sea. there are also cross-waves as water hits the steps of the adjoining building sending it side ways across the normal waves. the backwash leaves a pattern of diamonds as it returns to the sea.
The tree casts a shadow on the sand and the gaps between the leaves show the sunlight through. at the first glance these look solid rocks and there is an interesting interplay with the waves. as the waves wash over the beach, the layer of water passes over them, momentarily it looks as if they are moving or rippling. The changing quality of light through water and also sometimes the sand being carried by it create the illusion.
The waves leave an uneven(wavey!) line of lightweight debris behind on the sand as they flow back. There are larger debris, leaves and bits of wood being churned and carried back and forth.
I am brought back to the moment as a wave laps at my right foot hanging over the ledge, I had drifted off thinking about a film I had seen lately!
The sand is alive, there are sand coloured crabs of various sizes busy all over it and as they run around seems as if the whole beach is rippling. If they did not move you would not see them as they have a very natural and effective cameoflage. They are busy specially in the evening digging holes in the sand and throwing their scoops of sand, carried underneath them by their legs away from the holes leaving a delta shape. They are ever so watchful, two eyes perched on top of their stems and slightest danger sends them running sideways into their holes.
I have been reading some Osho and some of his words crystalise lots of things for me and have found it very interesting. I try to sleep on the grass without much luck but later borrow a mat from the guesthouse and grab my pillow and try again with a little more success. The ground is hard and there are pebbles and uneven surface does not allow for restful slumber.
