Austrias Museum of Fine Art

Kunsthistorisches museum was finished in 1891 and houses one of Europe's absolute finest art collections. The museum consists of two Renaissance buildings which are seperated by a park. The park was laid out to do both buildings justice.

Bregenzer Wald

Bregenzer Wald isn't as forested as the name implies. The name origins from previous times when the area was covered in primeval forest. In this area the scenery is magnificent with mountains, valleys, rivers, meadows and a little forest. The more you explore the area, the more you want of the fresh air and the beautiful scenery.

The Gastein area

The Gastein area has hot, radon-containing springs. This is where many of the famous Austrian spas lie and it is possible to swim outdoors in winter as well. If you visit the town Bad Gastein you will see the fascinating waterfall Gasteiner Ache rush right through the town centre.

The Lur Grotto

Austria has more than 3000 caves and grottos, one of them being the Lur Grotto which is situated close to the town Semriach. In the grotto you can see e.g 'The Underground Cathedral', which is one of Europe's largest natural underground caves.

The Medieval town Feldkirch in Voralberg

Feldkirch is a medieval town where many old buildings have been preserved. Among these are the beautiful St Nicolas church from 1478 and St John's church from 1218. The castle Schattenburg from 1190, today the local history museum, is certainly worth a visit. Feldkirch is a town full of atmosphere, something which is intensified by the winding streets and the nice cafés.

The worlds largest floating stage at Bodensee

The Bregenz festival plays. In Bodensee lies the town's greatest floating stage. The impressive stage is the largest of its kind in the world. When events take place on the stage, the audience sit on the shore on a giant stand with a capacity of more than 4000 people.

Central Austria

Esterházy Castle in Eisenstadt

Esterházy Castle in the city Eisenstadt is a striking experience. This is where Haydn was Court Composer for many years and the castle has a hall named after the composer. Here you can see how the floor and the columns are made of wood on the advise of the composer, as wood supplies the room with a better acoustics. In the lovely park of the castle there are small lakes, at one of which you'll find the Leopoldine Temple.

Saint Ägidu Cathedral in Graz

Saint Ägidu Cathedral was built in the period of 1438 to 1462 by Emperor Friedrich III. The style if late Gothic and several Renaissance cenotaphs can be see in the interior of the church. Originally the cathedral was just a chapel and was situated opposite the emperors's castle.

Schlossberg Hill at Graz

Schlossberg is a 473-metre high green hill, which rises above the unique red roof-tops of Graz. Previously there was a monastery on the hill, but now only the ruins are left. The top of the hill provides you with a fantastic view of the city.

The Graz Chimes

Glockenspielplatz. You should be here at either 11 am, 3 pm or 6 pm. The shutters open up a double window and out comes a couple dressed in national costumes. They are carved in wood and dance to the sound of the chimes in the tower. They have been dancing for almost 100 years and have never been one minute late all these years.

Innsbruck

The Anna column in Innsbruck

The Anna collumn in Innsbruck was erected in 1703 as a symbol of the successful dislodging of the enemy from town. On top of the column you can see a statue of Maria Teresia. She had the city's triumphal arch built in 1765 to celebrate her son Leopold's wedding.

The Golden Roof in Innsbruck

Goldenes Dachl in Innsbruck was built around year 1500. The golden roof is an oriel with a gilt roof-top which consists of around 3400 gilt copper plates. The oriel was ordered by Maximilian I and was supposed to work as a stand for the Court when events were going on on the square opposite the oriel.

Northern Austria

Alter Dom in Linz

Alter Dom or Ignatiuskirche was constructed in the period of 1669 to 1678. The architect behind the work was P.F Calone, who built the church in a Baroque style. The church is called 'the old cathedral' because it was the cathedral from 1785-1909. Today the Maria-Empfängnis-Dom is the cathedral in Linz.

House of Future, Ars Electronica in Linz

By the river banks of Donau lies Ars Electronica Center, which proposes what the 21th century will be like. Ars Electronica Center is an interesting reflection of the media world today and what development will bring. At the entrance you will receive a chip so you don't need a guide.

Linz Castle

Linzer Schloss was originally founded in the 15th century, but its present appearance only goes back to 1607. Today the castle holds a prehistoric and a history museum where you can also see an art collection which comprises Medieval to early 20th century works.

Pöstlingberg Mountain in Linz

Pöstlingberg lies just outside Linz and the Baroque pilgrim church on top of the mountain is the greatest attraction in the area. In order to reach the church you have to take the world's steepest mountain railway, which crawls all the way to the summit which provides a fantastic view of Linz. The church is not the only attraction at the mountain, however. If you take the train inside the very mountain, you arrive at an impressive fantasy world. You'll go right through the dragon's mouth right into wonderland and here you'll find an amusement park where you can meet Snow White and the seven dwarves among others.

Schönbrunn Castle

Outside Vienna lies Schönbrunn Schloss. The famous Baroque castle was home of Maria Theresa and later of Napoleon. Inside the castle has a sumptuous rococo decoration. In the castle's mirror hall Mozart played his first piano concert to the artistocracy.

Siegmund Freud Museum

In Vienna lies the Siegmund Freud Museum. The museum is situated in Sigmund Freud's former appartment. Here you can discover how he lived and how he worked. You can see his furniture, belongings, documents and photographs.

The monastery in Klosterneuburg

The sumptuous Augustine monastery in Klosterneuburg was founded in 1106 and has given the town its name. Next to the church lies the lavishly ornamented Stiftskirche Unsere liebe Frau, which was founded 30 years later.

The Stift Melk monastery in Niederösterreich

Stift Melk is one of Austria's most beautiful monasteries and its location ensures that its beauty is visible afar off. The Baroque buildings, the setting of The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, house a giant library. It contains more than 90,000 books and in addition the library owns a unique collection of valuable hand writings.

The Vienna Volksprater park area

Prater is a large, green area situated between the two river branches of Donau in Vienna. The park is a former hunting area of the imperial family and the aristocrats, but in the late 18th century the public had access to the area. Today Prater is divided into two areas. One for walking, picnics on the grass, cycling or football, while the other part contains an amusement park, whose most famous amusement is a giant ferris wheel, which provides an excellent view of the wonderful city.

Vienna Opera House

Staatsoper is the city's giant opera house. It was built in the period of 1861 to 1868 by the architects August Siccard vin Siccardsburg and Duar van der Nüll. When the building was finished the architects were exposed to so much criticism that van der Nüll committed suicide. Today Vienna's citizens are incredibly proud of their opera house, however.

Wine cellars in the Weinviertel area

Kellergassen. Below every wine-growing town in the Weinviertel area there are several tiers of wine-vaults. Here the wine matures in great oak casks in the vaulted tunnels. On the surface only the pastel Kellergassen, which look like ordinary houses, are visible.

Salzburg

Hohensalzburg Fortress in Salzburg

Hohensalzburg is a fortress situated 199 metres above the city. The construction was begun approximately 1000 years ago, but the present size of 30,000 square metres wasn't attained until the 16th century. The reigning arch bishops lived at the fortress, for which reason it is sumptuously furnished.

Mausoleum of Ferdinand II in Graz

The Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II lies next to the city's cathedral. The building consists of two chapels and a dome and was constructed by Pietro de Pomis (the exterior) and J.B Fischer von Erlach (the interior). The emperor's mother, Maria of Bavaria's sarcophagus stands in the middle of the mausoleum.

Mozarts House in Salzburg

Mozart's house in Salzburg can be seen in the friendly pedestrian street Getreidegasse. This is where Mozart was born on January 27th, 1756 and where he lived in his early years. Today the house is a museum where some of Mozart's musical instruments and early works are displayed.

Salzburg Cathedral

Arch bishop Wolf Dietrich was the man behind the construction of the cathedral and the three surrounding squares. In the vestibule is the entrance to the cathedral museum, where you can see an impressive collection of religious art. The cathedral was completed in 1628.

Tyrol

The sarcophag of Maximillian I

In Hofkirche you'll find the impressive sarcophag of Maximilian I. The sarcophag is made of black marble and is surrounded by 8 bronze statues, all the size of a grown man. The church at the sarcophag was built in the period of 1553-63 by Nikolaus Türing.

Vienna

Stephansdom Church in Vienna

Stephansdom, which symbolizes Vienna, lies in the middle of the city. The church tower is 137 metres high and towers above the city. The church has been rebuilt for more than eight hundred years. The building was begun in 1137 and only since 1962 has the church kept its present appearance.

The Parliament

The Parliament building in Vienna is designed by the Danish architect Theophilus Hansen and it was built in the period of 1873 to 1883. T. Hansen was very much inspired by Greece and the Parliament building looks like a Greek temple with Corinthian columns and antique ornaments.
