Travel preparation

Best time to visit

In the rain season from December to June the water sometimes wash away the roads, which makes some distances impossible to travel. During this time the warm and moist climate can be quite unpleasant, and the beaches are full with people who, wishing to escape the heat, seek the coast. However, it is also during this time of year that the water's temperature reaches its highest point, which make the Pacific waves even more appealing. From July to August the beaches are fairly quiet. All in all the best time to visit is from September to November.

Local conditions

Time zone

When the time is 12.00 in England (summer time) it is 06.00 at the Pacific Coast. When the time is 12.00 in England (winter time) it is 07.00 at the Pacific Coast.

Culture and entertainment

The music at the coast is very rhythmical and inspired by African music. It always creates a good atmosphere when the loud rhymes are played and both the music and the people dancing are entertaining. The Coast region is also known for its salsatecas and discos, where the salsa is played and danced well into the morning. The locals are often very eager to teach foreigners how to do the exotic steps.

Accommodation / Hotel

In the cities by the coast, the bungalow at the beach called cabanas, is a very popular form of accommodation. In the country the standards of hotels varies a lot. Staying at a room without air con or ventilation quite easily become intolerable. Book your hotel in Pacific Coast of Ecuador here

Local transport

Ordinary taxis are rarely necessary outside the big city Guayaquil. River taxis on the other hand can be quite handy, even on longer distances. The river taxis are simple canoes made of wood with an outboard motor, and they sail up and down the rivers in the Coastal provinces.

Other transport

Taking the bus is the most used way to get around but during the rain season there are a lot of delays and cancellations because many roads are washed away. Some well-managed route boats can be found at the rivers in the area.

Special conditions

Watch out for the very strong undercurrent, which each year takes its toll among careless bathing guests. There is also malaria in the area, even when you are outside the jungle area.
