Sydney has quite a few museums, an aquarium and a zoo. Besides this, there are a lot of markets and festivals, such as the Sydney Festival, lasting through most of January, where you can experience outdoor concerts, street theatre and some impressive fireworks. In June, Sydney has a film festival, and in October there's a jazz festival at Manly.
