Ancud

The city Ancud

Ancud is Chiloé's largest city with 17,000 inhabitants. It is situated in the northern part of the island and was founded in 1767 in order to defend the coastline of the island. Ancud is a charming fishing harbour with very friendly inhabitants. One of the city's attractions is the Museo Regional Aurelio Bórquez Canobra with an excellent exhibition on the island's history and culture.

Chile

Lauca National Park

This nature reserve is situated 160 kilometres north-east of Arica, close to the Bolivian border. The reserve has one of the world's highest situated lakes, Lake Chungará, beautifully placed at the fppt of several vulcanoes.

Puyehue National Park

Chile's most popular national park is situated in the beautiful Lake District. The park covers 107,000 hectares, primarily with forest areas and large, impressive volcanoes. This park illustrates Chile's impressing nature with paths for walking, a spectacular view of the lakes, skiing areas, hot springs and waterfalls. A hike may also introduce you to a puma or the rare pudú (a small deer).

The city Viña del Mar

Situated only 10 kilometres north of Valparaiso, Viña del Mar is well known as Chile's best beach area with beautiful white sand beaches. Moreover, the city is known as "the garden city" due to its subtropical area with palms and banana trees. Several parks can be found in this city and many go for a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, which may be rented near the beach. Moreover, located in this area, you will find Chile's national, botanical garden with lots of exotic plants.

The Conguillio national reserve

This national reserve covers an area of more than 60,000 hectares with a magnificent nature. Here, you will find many deep, blue lakes, large forest areas and impressive, deep clefts. The centre of this reserve is the 3125 metres high vulcano called Llaima, which was in eruption for the last time in 1957. This park is highly recommended, but please notice that winters may bring along up to three metres of snow!

The desert village San Pedro de Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama is a small village situated in the northern part of the Atacama Desert. East of the village you will see large vulcanoes, some of which are still active, and some are extinct. Near the village you will find the Valla de la Luna; a spectacular view at sunset. Situated in the desert, temperatures may get rather high during day and drop to freezing point at night. The village saves electricity and consequently is it only available from 4 p.m. to midnight every day, so if interested in visiting one of the city's bars you are advised to bring along a flashlight for the night. The village is dominated by many excursion offers, inviting you to spend a couple of days in the desert or in Bolivia. This is a perfect place to go for a relax and to enjoy the quietness for a couple of days.

The El Tatio Geysers

North of the city San Pedro de Stacama, the world's highest situated geyser area can be found, called El Tatio. The area is situated in 4300 metres height, and you are in for a spectacular view when the hundreds of muddy puddles and geysers bubble and hum and you can feel the steam in you face. Please watch your step in order not to fall in and get burned, as many tourists already have done. In this area, you can also enjoy hot springs with temperatures of "only" 40 degrees Celsius!

The Mamiña area

For centuries, Mamiña has been a very popular place with many hot springs. Today, you can find several excellent places of accommodation in this area, and many tourists come here to relax and enjoy the hot springs.

The village Choshuenco

Choshuenco is a small village in the south-eastern part of the Panguipulli lake. Agriculture dominates this area, together with a small saw mill. Choshuenco is the place to visit if interested in visiting the locals and learning about their way of living. Moreover, Choshuenco has an excellent beach with black sand.

The Villarrica national reserve

This reserve is the homestead of the 2850 metres high vulcano called Villarrica. Back in 1971 the vulcano was active with an ejection of 30 million square metres of lava, totalling changing the structure of the rivers in this area. The area is one of the best ones in Chile for trekking and hiking. You will find several excellent paths, yet please notice that trekking illegal without a guide. Moreover, this area is a popular skiing area during winter, where a lot of snow will fall.

Wine plantations

In central Chile, several wine plantations can be found, and the country is gradually known for its excellent wines. Most wine yards have vinous tastes, and you may even get a guided tour. You may visit the Viña Santa Carolina, the Viña y Tori or the Viña Undurraga.

Chiloe

The Chiloé national reserve

In the Parque Nacional Chile you may follow Darwin's footsteps as he visited the park 150 years ago and was very fond of it. The park presents beautiful, green forest areas and an impressive coastal line. Moreover, you may see a rich animal life with foxes as well as penguins.

The village Dalcahue

Dalcahue is a small village situated about 20 kilometres north-east of the city Castro. Dalcahue is named after a local canooe; a dalcas. In this city you will find impressive local architecture and several markets with local crafts. These markets have a very lively and charming atmosphere , and you may buy everything from wood crafts, basket work and groceries.

Easter Islands

Stone plateaus and stone monuments.

This island is dominated by plateaus and monuments made of stone, originally created by the Polynesians and can now be found everywhere. Among others, you may visit Ahu Moai, Ahu Tahai, Ahu Akapu and Ahu Hanga Tetenga to see these impressive monuments and extraordinary views from the plateaus. Moreover, you may find many exciting caves surrounding many of the plateaus.

The village Hanga Roa

Hanga Roa is the place inhabited by basically the entire population in this island. It is a colourful village with small alleys, living almost exclusively of the tourists and only a few people make their living by fishing and agriculture. On of Hanga Roa's attractions is the Museo Antropológico Sebastián Englert, with an impressive collection on the island's history and culture.

La Serena

The village Vicuña

Vicuña is a small village situated east of La Serena. Fruit plantations dominate this village, where lemons, avocados and papaya are grown. This village is moreover well known due to numerous observations of UFOs over this area.

Norte Chico

The beach areas near Caldera and Bahia Inglesa

These two small cities are located near the coast. Both have increased in size due to the discovery of silver in this area, which attracted many people. Today, these two cities compete on the best beach areas, and Bahia Inglesa is so far taking the lead! However, this means that living in Bahia Inglesa is somewhat more expensive than living in Caldera, which also has wonderful beaches.

The national reserve Pan De Azucar

This national reserve covers a large area surrounding the coastline with unique nature landscapes. A walk in the park enables you to see beautiful, white sand beaches, unique vegetation and a fascinating animal life. This area has many different bird species and lots of animals originating from the ocean, like for instance sea lions.

Northern Chile (Norte Grande)

The city Arica

Arica is situated near the coast in Northern Chile. During time, this city has been an important trading point for trade with foreign countries. Today, the inhabitants make their living from the tourists visiting the beautiful beaches. Many Indians can be found in Arica, and you will easily see them in the streets where they sell local crafts and fruit.

Santiago

Skiing

The Chilean winter takes places from June till October, and when snow falls in this area, you will find excellent skiing possibilities in central Chile. Places like Farellones-El Colorado, La Parva and Portillo all have good skiing possibilities with good ski tracks and several lifts. Some of the good skiing places are situated only a one-hour drive from Santiago.

The capital Santiago

Being the capital of Chile, Santiago is a modern metropolis. Orienting in the city is rather easy and here you may surely experience many sights. For instance, you may find the historical Plaza de Armas, the Pre-Colombian Museum or the Museo de Santiago. The city furthermore lives during the night, where a trip to Bellavista, known as the Parisian district, puts a beautiful end to a wonderful day.

The port Valparaiso

Situated 120 kilometres north-east of Santiago, Valparaiso is Chile's most important port. The city is placed between the coast and the surrounding mountains. A walk in the mountains will give you a splendid view of the area, while a walk near the harbour will introduce you to a lively market area.

Southern Heartland

The city Curico

A cosy village surrounded by wine- and fruit plantations, situated in an amazing landscape. The city's impressive buildings and cosy Plaza de Armas with beautiful palm trees makes this area one of the most beautiful of Southern Chile. Moreover, this city is an excellent starting point for a visit to the surrounding rural districts, the coastal line or parts of the Andes Mountains.

The national reserve Laguna Del Laja

The 2985 metres high vulcano, Antuco, used to spray lava damming the Rio Laja and creating the large lake in this area. This area is excellent for hiking with many beautiful tracks to follow in this area with mountains, large forest areas, large glaciers and a fascinating wildlife.

The Rio de los Cipreses reserve

This national reserve is 37,000 hectares and invites you to experience wonderful landscape pictures. This area is dominated by vulcanoes, valleys and lake districts. Moreover several forest areas nearby have an impressive wildlife.
