Fillip II of Macedonia built the old city Hereaclea in the 4th century B.C. It was conquered by the Romans two centuries later, and became an important area in the Via Egnatia. Archaeological excavations are still going on, although you can now see the Roman baths and the theatre. There is also a small museum by the ruins, where you can get an insight in the fascinating history of the place.
The Ohrid Lake is the deepest lake in Europe. It is 290 meters deep, as well as being one of the oldest lakes in the world. A gorgeous mountainous area surrounds the lake. It is the perfect place to relax by the lake and enjoy the amazing view.
This museum is situated in the northern part of Skopje, near the old market place. It is a modern white building, and possesses an impressive collection of artefacts displaying the history of the area. Near the museum you can find the bazaar district, which is one of the most picturesque in Europe.
The city of Ohrid is the most popular tourist destination in Macedonia, with around 30 cultural monuments in the area. There are many ruins from different time periods in and around the city. From Ohrid, you can also go on an excursion to the Albanian border to see the Church of Sveti Naum from the 17th century.
The old part of Ohrid is one of the most beautiful places for a walk. There is a charming atmosphere as well as nice architecture. If you are interested in history, there is also an archaeological museum well worth a visit.
The Sveti Spas Church is situated in the northern part of Skopje. Of particular interest is the fact that the church is half buried underground, and therefore seems a bit odd when seen from outside. The reason for this is that when the church was built in the 17th century, churches were not allowed to be bigger than the mosques.
Daud Pasha Baths are found north of the Turkish bridge in Skopje. It used to be the biggest Turkish baths in all of the Balkans, and are still very well worth a visit.
