Cameron Highlands

Robertson Rose Garden

The garden was landscaped in 1934 by the married couple Robertson. Today, the rose garden has over a hundred different species and it is possible to buy dried flowers and honey here.

Tea plantations

There are many tea plantations in the area. It is possible to see the tea production all the way from the fresh leaves to the packing. The production of tea has changed very little during the last 100 years and you will still see tea pickers on the fields carrying plaited baskets on their back.

Georgetown

The town of Georgetown

The largest town on the island is Georgetown. It is one of the towns with the most atmosphere in the entire Asia. You will find a town full of small uneven streets, where it is swarming with street traders and trishaws. Wealth of peoples lives in this town and mosques and temples are situated next to each other. There are many grandiose buildings in the town. The Town Hall is one of those buildings. It is built in old British colonial style. The impressive Khoo Kongsi, which is an old Chinese clan house, is another one.

Kuala Lumpur

Petronas twin towers

Petronas' twin towers are the tallest buildings in the world. They have been built by the oil company Petronas and are 452 metres tall. The architect, Cesa Pelli, built the towers from the principles of the Islamic building art. The facade of the building is made of glass and the building has 88 floors.

Sultan Abdul Samas building

The building was made between 1894 and 1897 by the British architect A.C. Norman and is considered one of the capital's characteristics. The building is a beautiful mixture of Victorian and Moorish building style. Today, the buildings house the High Court and the Ministry of Justice.

The Mosque Masjid Jamek

Masjid Jamek is a magnificent piece of Muslim architecture. The mosque, which was built in 1909, is situated where the rivers of Klang and Gombak meet. It was in this exact spot that Kuala Lumpur was founded. The mosque has golden onion domes, arching cloisters and beautiful marble floors. It is situated in a peaceful garden of palm trees.

The National Museum

The National Museum of Malaysia is situated in the capital Kuala Lumpur. Here you can se real sculls from some of the victims of the headhunters of the past. The museum has a fine historical collection about the culture and traditions of the country.

Taman Negara National Park

The park is situated in the rain forest. Most of the life in the park take place in the treetops, and it is swarming with birds in all colours and with screaming monkeys. There are also tigers and elephants in the park, but people rarely see them. To get to the headquarters of the park you will have to sail on muddy rivers and the only way to get around in the park is by foot or by boat.

The Batu caves

Batu Caves are huge caves, situated north of Kuala Lumpur. To get to the entrance of the caves, you first have to climb up the 272 steps that lead to the caves. The biggest cave is 400 metres long and 120 metres high. The Batu Caves are a Hindu sanctuary and every year the caves set the stage for the Hindu Thaipusam festival.

The Kek Lok Si Temple

The temple is one of the finest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia. Kek Lok Si is situated majestically on the top of a hill near the village of Ayer Itam. The temple is huge and the Ten Thousand Buddhas' Pagoda is placed in the middle of the temple. The pagoda consists of many floors and the building has a golden top with the form of a spiral.

The Langkawi group of islands

At Langkawi you will find white sand beaches surrounded by palm trees. In spite of the fact that the island is a tax-free area, there are not that many tourists. This is why the island is ideal for relaxation and for a bathing holiday. There are many beautiful waterfalls on the island and between the islands you will find magnificent coral reefs, which are an obvious target for divers and snorkelers.

The Nia caves

You will find the Nia caves in the state of Sarawak. The oldest trace of humans in south East Asia was found in these caves: The scull of a cave man, which has been dated 35,000-40,000 year back. Several well-preserved cave paintings have been found in the caves and they have also found canoe-like boats.

Malaysian East Coast

The tropical island Pulau Tioman

Tioman is a wonderful tropical island, which has not yet been spoiled by tourists. Most of the island is covered by rain forest and the island is very popular among people on trekking. The island has an abundance of peaceful palm beaches that you can often have all to yourself.

The waterfalls near Kota Tinggi

Approximately 15 kilometres north of the little town of Kota Tinggi, you will find the Kota Tinggi waterfalls. The water drops 34 metres on shining rocks, which have been polished through the years. The water then runs further down in small basins, where you can take a lovely swim in the heat.

Turtles

Along the East Coast by night, especially in June, July and August, it is possible to see the magnificent animals crawl on land to dig their eggs into the sand. Just as clumsily they move on land, just as gracious these fascinating animals are at sea.

Penang

The Kek Lok Si Temple

The mountain Penang Hill

The first mountain station, Penang Hill, is situated 830 metres above sea level. You can either walk to the summit or you can go by one of the trains especially made for this purpose. Besides the cool and refreshing climate, there is also a fantastic view over Penang and the main land from the top of the mountain.

Sabah and Sarawak

Longhouses in the village of Segu Bunuk

In the village of Segu Bunuk you will see the traditional way of housing of the natives of Sarawaks, the longhouses. The longhouses can be up to 180 metres long and 20 metres wide. A longhouse can house up to 300 people. Each family has its own compartment, but it is on the terrace of the house that most activities take place. Here they cook, repair clothing and eat.

Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre

Orangutans that have been in captivity are trained to look after themselves in nature on this centre. During the training they will learn how to find food and survive in the rain forest. The possibilities of walking around in the national park near the centre are good.

The Kinabalu Mountain

This 4101 metres tall mountain dominates the scenery of Kinbalu Park. It rises above the tropical rain forest, which has a fantastic flora and is famous for its many species of orchids. Considering the height of mount Kinabalu, it is fairly easy to climb and it can be done in two days, even if you are not in the best shape.

Turtle Island National Park

The three turtle islands are situated 40 kilometres north of Sandakan. The turtles crawl onto land on these islands to dig their eggs into the sand. Small turtles dig their way up of the sand and go for the sea on these islands. The only island, which can be accessed by tourists, is Pulau Seligan.
